Region 425 AYSO’s EXTRA (Travel) Program FAQ

2020-21 Season

What is “EXTRA”? AYSO EXTRA is a travel soccer program providing progressive player development, designed for players who have the interest, skills and abilities and want to enhance their experience and individual growth through soccer while retaining the spirit of and organization membership in AYSO.  AYSO’s EXTRA program is for 10U and 12U players.  EXTRA includes an additional two hour weekly practice with professional trainers and an additional game on the weekends against EXTRA teams from nearby Regions. EXTRA teams participate in playoffs at the end of the spring. Roster spots are limited and therefore Region 425 holds tryouts to select team members.

Do I still play Primary AYSO? Yes, there is a requirement that all EXTRA players continue to participate in the Primary AYSO program for both games and practices. Players are required to make at least 50% of their Primary AYSO team games.  EXTRA is just that-EXTRA Play!!  In addition to the weekly EXTRA two hour practice and Sunday game, EXTRA players play on a primary AYSO team.  Required primary soccer includes one practice per week and one Saturday game.

What are the age cutoffs? Do they vary from Primary AYSO teams? There is an age cutoff. Primary AYSO is based on grade only while EXTRA is based on birth date. Just like the primary program, U10 means players U9 & U10 combined and U12 means players U11 & U12 combined.  See chart below for details.

9U/10U Division:  Rising third and fourth graders in fall 2020

11U/12U Division:  Rising fifth and sixth graders in fall 2020

Who do we play against? Games are played against other teams in Area 6D.  The other Regions in our Area are Deerfield, Morton Grove, Highland Park, Rolling Meadows, Skokie, Glenview, Evanston, Peterson Park, Rogers Park, and Chicago Lakefront.  Not all of these Regions will have EXTRA teams.

When are practices?Practices are on Mondays from 4:30-6:00 PM.

When and where are the games? The games will not conflict with the primary game schedules. Games are on Sundays at 5:30 (in the fall kick off time is moved up once it gets too dark for a 5:30 start).  Games are either at home (in Region 425) or away at a neighboring Region.

When is the EXTRA season? The EXTRA season typically starts a week before the regular outdoor season and playoffs start on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend.

Requirements for Tryouts:

Players must register in advance for tryouts.  Registration is available on our website.  The tryout cost is $5.

My child can only go to one of the tryout days.  Is that okay?  Players should attend both days for a more complete evaluation.  Players can attend only one tryout day but it is not ideal.

What is the cost of the program?Cost for the program is $450.  If your child makes the team, the non-refundable payment is due in full within two days of notice.  If not paid, your slot will be offered to the next player on the list.  This cost is in addition to the primary AYSO registration.

When are tryouts?

Due to the current situation, state guidelines requiring social distancing, and in accordance with USSF, AYSO National, IWSL, YSSL and other major youth sports organizations, we have determined that the AYSO EXTRA program will not be holding in-person tryouts as we ordinarily would this time of year. The modified plan for the tryout is listed tryout page.

How will players be rated at tryouts?  Players will be evaluated by professional coaches on all aspects of soccer: dribbling, passing, ball control, athleticism and attitude.  Attitude includes the ability to listen and follow instructions.

What should players bring to tryouts?  Your child should come ready to play soccer wearing shin guards and cleats.  Players should bring water.

Can there be more than one team per division?  If there are enough coaches and high quality players for more than one team, then we will have two teams.  The teams would be balanced evenly.

Can I be on the same team as my friend? There are no player or coach requests.  If there is more than one team in a division the teams are formed based on tryout evaluations only.

How many players are on a team?  For 10U, there are 10 players on a team.  For 12U, there are 12 players on a team.

Who coaches the EXTRA team?  Certified parent volunteer coaches partner with professional coaches who assist with weekly practices and game evaluations.  Volunteer coaches manage the games.

What else should I know?  If your child is involved in lots of activities, EXTRA might not be for him or her.  Players who make the team are expected to attend EVERY practice and EVERY game.  A full commitment is required, and players and parents must sign a commitment letter.  If a player cannot fulfill the EXTRA commitment he/she will be asked to leave the program.
